The Walkmen swung by Seattle’s KEXP to perform a handful of tracks while in town on tour, and it turns out they were in a Johnny Cash kind of mood because they played all Cash covers. OneThirtyBPM was kind enough to upload those and share them with the music loving world. Here, is my personal favorite of the bunch, their acoustic take on “Mr. Lonesome”.
Continuing with their 10 Covers/ 10 Days/ 10 Years project started with Moby’s “South Side” and continued yesterday with Jimmy Eat World’s “Sweetness, here is Tokyo Police Club trying their hand at The Strokes’ “Under Control”. The festivities are kept fairly close to the chest on this one as they don’t really change things up all that much, but that’s fine because it’s a solid cover all the same.
As with all Xiu Xiu covers, Jamie Stewart manages to deconstruct the song down it’s melody and then reconstruct a whole new vibe around that. With this cover of Rihanna’s hit jam, Xiu Xiu builds sharp synth and string lines into a something of a nightmare dance beat. It’s pretty wild to hear.
